A member of the National Hunting Federation is suspected of illegally keeping birds from the Red Data Book.

A member of the «Құсбегілік» Federation has had 35 rare birds of prey, listed in the Red Book, confiscated. According to the investigation, a local resident had been illegally acquiring and keeping them in a nursery on the grounds of his home in Karaganda since 2017.

HOW THE CASE WAS INVESTIGATED

The Department of the Agency for Financial Monitoring (AFM) for Pavlodar Region has announced the completion of an investigation into a local resident suspected of the illegal acquisition and keeping of rare and endangered birds of prey.

According to the investigation, starting in 2017, the suspect, a member of the «Құсбегілік» Federation and the Kazakhstan national hunting team using birds of prey, organised an illegal nursery on the grounds of his home in Karaganda.

WHICH BIRDS WERE DISCOVERED

According to the investigation, the suspect used a themed Instagram page dedicated to national hunting, the keeping and treatment of birds of prey, to establish contact with people who delivered rare species of raptors taken from their natural habitat to him.

During a search of his residence, 35 birds of prey were discovered and seized, including saker falcons, golden eagles, and peregrine falcons. All these species are listed in the Red Book and are classified as rare and endangered animals.

WHAT MEASURES HAVE BEEN TAKEN

The suspect has been placed in custody. By court order, his Toyota 4Runner vehicle has been seized.

The confiscated birds have been transferred to the Karaganda Zoo for temporary keeping. They will be released into their natural habitat after the court's sentence comes into legal force.

No further information about the case is being disclosed in accordance with Article 201 of the Criminal Procedure Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
