A 54-year-old man died after falling from an electric scooter on the Eastern Bypass Road in Almaty. According to preliminary data, before the fall he was travelling at a speed of around 90 km/h.
HOW THE ACCIDENT HAPPENED
According to the Almaty City Police Department (PD), the man was riding an electric scooter at night along the left edge of the carriageway. While overtaking a car travelling in the same direction, he lost control and fell onto the asphalt.
The final seconds of the journey were captured by CCTV cameras and dashcams of passing cars. During the fall, the man's protective helmet flew off. He died at the scene from his injuries.
POLICE HAVE LAUNCHED AN INVESTIGATION
After the incident, police officers and an ambulance crew arrived at the scene. However, the man could not be saved.
A pre-trial investigation has been opened into the accident. Police are establishing all the circumstances of what happened.
HOW MANY ACCIDENTS INVOLVING ELECTRIC SCOOTERS HAVE OCCURRED IN ALMATY
Since the beginning of 2026, 91 accidents involving electric scooters have been registered in the city. As a result of the crashes, 96 people were injured.
This case became the first fatal accident involving an electric scooter in Almaty since the beginning of the year.
Recall that from 25 August 2026, in Kazakhstan the movement of electric scooters on pavements and pedestrian paths was banned. The new requirements came into force against the backdrop of a rising number of accidents.
Only persons over the age of 18 who hold a driving licence of the relevant category and use a protective helmet are permitted to travel on the carriageway.
