In Astana, it has been proposed to name the light rail transit (LRT) system "Tarlan Astana". The commission unanimously supported this option from among several proposed names.
WHAT OPTIONS WERE CONSIDERED
The matter was discussed at a meeting of the Astana maslikhat.
As reported by the acting head of the city's department for language development and archives, Doszhan Isabek, proposals were submitted to the akimat from residents and public organisations.
Among the options put forward were "Sunqar", "Lashyn", "Qulan", "Aspa", and others. Following the discussion, the commission unanimously supported the name "Tarlan Astana".
THE MEANING BEHIND THE NAME
According to Doszhan Isabek, the name "Tarlan" refers to the historical heritage of Kazakhstan.
It is associated with the horse of Er Targyn from the epic "Er Targyn", and also, according to some sources, with the warhorses of Kobylandy Batyr and Isatai Taymanov. Additional details about these historical connections are not specified in the materials presented.
WHY THE NAME CHANGE WAS PROPOSED
In international practice, transport systems are often given short brand names that reflect the cultural characteristics and identity of a city.
It is noted that the LRT is currently one of the key public transport systems in the capital, but its existing name is of a technical and project nature.
WHAT IS KNOWN ABOUT THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE AREA AROUND THE STATIONS
In addition to the name discussion, additional funding has been announced for the urban environment around the LRT stations.
18.3 billion tenge have been allocated for the improvement and development of the surrounding areas.
