The Government of Kazakhstan has approved the construction project for a full-cycle biopharmaceutical complex within the special economic zone 'Alatau' in the Almaty region. The total volume of private investment in the project will amount to 32.5 billion tenge.
WHAT IS KNOWN ABOUT THE PROJECT
According to the Government press service, an investment agreement has been concluded between the Ministry of Health and Steppe Pharmaceuticals LLP. The corresponding resolution was signed by Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov.
The project includes the construction of a full-cycle biopharmaceutical complex within the SEZ 'Alatau' in the Almaty region. The production is focused on localising high-tech facilities in the pharmaceutical industry.
The enterprise plans to produce 20 types of medicines. The list will include drugs for the treatment of oncological and rare diseases, as well as immunobiological products.
WHEN WILL PRODUCTION LAUNCH
The launch of the enterprise is scheduled for 2031. It is expected to reach its design capacity in 2032, and the transition to a full production cycle in key areas is planned for 2034.
In addition to manufacturing medicines, the project includes research and development work. It also includes the development of an in-house R&D division, conducting bioequivalence studies, preparing registration dossiers, and implementing international GMP standards.
A training and professional development system for Kazakhstani specialists is planned to be established at the complex.
WHAT IMPACT IS EXPECTED FROM THE PROJECT
The implementation of the project will help strengthen the country's drug security and create modern pharmaceutical infrastructure in the Almaty region.
It is expected to create around 60 new jobs.
The Government also reported that currently 8 major investment projects are being implemented in Kazakhstan in the pharmaceutical industry.
Last year, the production volume of domestic pharmaceutical products reached 191.1 billion tenge, which is 8.7% more compared to 2024. The total volume of investments attracted to the industry exceeded 390 billion tenge.
