The Military Court of the Almaty Garrison sentenced a deputy battalion commander to 4 years in prison following the death of a conscripted soldier who died as a result of an unintentional machine gun discharge.
HOW THE TRAGEDY HAPPENED
According to the press service of the Main Military Prosecutor's Office, the criminal case was heard by the Military Court of the Almaty Garrison. The tragic incident occurred on 23 September 2025 during the servicing of weapons by personnel of one of the military units of the Taldykorgan Garrison.
During the work, an unintentional machine gun discharge occurred. As a result of the sustained injury, a conscripted soldier, Seytkali A., died.
WHAT THE INVESTIGATION ESTABLISHED
The investigation concluded that the deputy battalion commander failed to ensure compliance with safety measures when handling weapons. In particular, he did not organise a complete inspection of the weaponry after firing drills conducted the previous day.
It is reported that a cartridge remained in the weapon after the firing drills, which subsequently caused the fatal injury to the serviceman.
WHAT DECISION THE COURT MADE
Following the trial, the official was found guilty under Part 2 of Article 453 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan ("Negligent attitude towards duty resulting in grave consequences").
The court imposed a sentence of 4 years in prison. The verdict has not yet entered into legal force.
