Villagers protest over dismantled road in Atyrau region

In the village of Sarytogai, Makhambet District, Atyrau Region, local residents are demanding the restoration of a road. According to ORDA, more than 50 villagers came out to protest and are demanding that the district mayor Kairat Nurlybayev and the regional mayor Serik Shapkenov come to meet them.

"We have been waiting for the mayor for an hour now, but he still hasn't arrived. We have only one demand - let them restore the road. This is how the residents of Sarytogai are forced to live like vagrants. If the mayor doesn't come, we will go further. What a disgrace? Cars can't drive, even fire engines and ambulances can't get through. We have sick people at home. It is very hard for pregnant women. So let them restore our road", the protesters demand.

It is reported that on 10 May, the road between the villages of Makhambet and Sarytogai was temporarily dismantled to protect against flooding, but was later restored.

At that time, in order to lower the water level on the road section, the asphalt was removed and two pipes, 11 metres long and 1.5 metres wide, were installed. But a week later, the highway was closed again.

The length of the road connecting Makhambet and Sarytogai is 5 kilometres. Nearly 13,000 people live in these villages.

"By decision of the emergency operational headquarters of Makhambet District, a breach was made in the road connecting the two villages to divert the large volume of incoming water", the press service of the Atyrau Region mayor's office reported.

Recall that in the city of Kulsary, Zhylyoi District, Atyrau Region, on 15 May, people came out to protest. About 300 people set up tents and spent the night near the district mayor's office. The city residents demanded compensation of 400,000 tenge per square metre for their flooded homes, instead of 240,000 tenge

Later, video of a confrontation between police and Kulsary residents began to circulate online. The video's author claims that the footage captures the moment when police try to prevent protesters from setting up tents on the square in front of the city mayor's office building.
