The Department of the Financial Monitoring Agency (AFM) in the Karaganda region has stopped a large-scale drug smuggling operation.

According to the agency's press service, a citizen of Kazakhstan organised the delivery of drugs from Thailand. To conceal his involvement, he recruited a minor acquaintance, arranging for the parcel to be collected in the minor's name through Kazpost JSC.

During a search of the young man, officers discovered 1.3 kg of a narcotic substance — cannabis wax.

The investigation established that the suspect was distributing drugs in Karaganda via hidden stashes, using the Telegram messenger. The individual has been arrested for two months. The investigation is ongoing.

Previously, the largest single cocaine seizure in the country's history was made in Almaty, weighing 13 tonnes 183 kg.

It was reported that the shipment was intended for onward transit through Kazakhstan to other countries. Two foreign nationals were detained on suspicion of involvement in organising the drug trafficking route.
