Mazhilis deputy Bakytzhan Bazarbek reported that the company RAMS has resumed construction of the 40-storey RAMS Beyond Almaty complex, despite having previously received an order to suspend work.

According to Bes.media, the Mazhilis member believes that this situation will serve as an example for tightening the Construction Code.

"This morning, RAMS resumed work again. That is, it is already illegal," Bazarbek said.

He also noted that the problem of high-density development is characteristic not only of Almaty but also of Astana, Shymkent, and other cities.

"We are literally losing Almaty before our eyes," the deputy emphasised.

Bazarbek stated that the new Construction Code will provide for tougher penalties for illegal construction, the filling of ravines and hollows, as well as the cutting of mountain ranges.

Shortly before this, the deputy announced that construction of RAMS Beyond Almaty had been suspended after a raid and the issuance of an order by GASK (State Architectural and Construction Control).

Earlier, residents of Almaty opposed the construction of the RAMS Beyond Almaty residential complex and sent a collective appeal to the city akimat. In the petition, citizens demanded that the project be cancelled and the site turned into a park area.

The authors of the initiative claimed that the construction of the 40-storey building and five 10-storey blocks would overload the transport and social infrastructure of the area, where there is already a shortage of parking spaces and green spaces.
