The Almaty Prosecutor's Office returned academic buildings and a stadium to the Abai Kazakh National Pedagogical University (KazNPU).

According to the department's press service, prosecutors uncovered instances of the illegal sale of university property. Despite a shortage of educational and living space, the former university leadership sold two academic buildings with a total area of over 1,500 sq m to private individuals without holding tenders or an appraisal.

One of the buildings was subsequently leased back to the university itself, while another was turned into an entertainment venue. In addition, the former leadership of KazNPU transferred a sports stadium covering more than 5 hectares to third parties for a period of 10 years.

"For 5 years, the football field was used for commercial purposes, and 16,000 students were unable to fully engage in physical education or hold sporting events," the statement said.

Following the prosecutor's oversight actions, the property assets were returned to the national university.

It is worth recalling that in December 2024, the Chairman of the Supreme Audit Chamber (SAC) Alikhan Smailov reported that department employees had identified inefficient use of funds and violations amounting to 73.5 billion tenge at Nazarbayev University.
