The operator of the North Caspian Project, the company North Caspian Operating Company N.V. (NCOC), denies reports of an oil spill in the area of the Kashagan field in the Caspian Sea.
According to the company's press service, NCOC specialists inspected the site and found no evidence of a hydrocarbon leak.
“According to images taken by the SENTINEL-1A satellites on 30 March 2024 and TerraSAR-X on 2 April 2024, a natural phenomenon was observed in the northern Caspian Sea, including a small area north of Island D of the Kashagan field. Such phenomena were no longer present in other images taken in subsequent days. The area near Island D mentioned in the publication was surveyed, and no spills or leaks were detected.”, the statement said.
It was also reported that NCOC's offshore facilities continue to operate as normal.
Earlier, the executive director of the 'Globus' environmental and legal initiative centre, Galina Chernova, reported an oil spill in the area of the Kashagan field in the Caspian Sea. According to her, the spill covered an area of approximately 7 sq km, and the slick was drifting north into the Caspian Sea.
