The former son-in-law of Nursultan Nazarbayev, Rakhat Aliyev, asked the American side for assistance in safely moving to the USA. At the same time, he hoped to recover around $2 billion (more than 1 trillion tenge) which, according to him, his family lost after the confiscation of assets in Kazakhstan. This became known from published letters of the American sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

According to Ulysmedia.kz, from the correspondence it follows that after losing political influence in 2007–2008, Aliyev was hiding in Europe and intended to use property disputes to create reputational risks for Nursultan Nazarbayev in the West.

According to available information, he claimed that his family was a victim of political persecution and hoped for the intervention of the US administration.

The letters also state that Aliyev hired a company that was involved in promoting visits by American congressmen to Kazakhstan and shaping Aliyev's image as a "victim of repression."

It is reported that the US Ambassador to Kazakhstan, Richard Hoagland, warned the country's authorities about Aliyev's attempts to use the USA for his own purposes. Judging by the published materials, the administration of Barack Obama refused to participate in settling Aliyev's property and political disputes.

For reference: Jeffrey Epstein — an American financier accused of creating a criminal network for the sexual exploitation of minors. His connections with politicians and businessmen became the subject of great public outcry. In 2019, after new charges were brought, Epstein committed suicide in prison. Earlier, the US Congress almost unanimously approved the declassification of documents related to Epstein. The bill was signed by President Donald Trump.

It is worth recalling that Rakhat Aliyev held key government posts: he headed the tax police, was Deputy Chairman of the National Security Committee (KNB), served as Kazakhstan's ambassador to several countries, and later became First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs. Until 2007, he was married to Dariga Nazarbayeva, the ex-president's eldest daughter.

After the initiation of cases concerning alleged money laundering, high treason, and involvement in high-profile murders, including the case of Altynbek Sarsenbayev and the kidnapping of two bankers, Aliyev left Kazakhstan. In February 2015, he was found dead in a Vienna prison. According to the official version, he committed suicide. During his lifetime, Aliyev published a book titled "The Godfather", in which he described his version of the internal processes within Nazarbayev's inner circle.
