The deputy head of the city Department for the Development of Communal Infrastructure of Almaty has been sentenced to 6 years in prison for extorting 19.5 million tenge from a local entrepreneur.

According to the Anti-Corruption Agency, the Medeu District Court of Almaty issued a guilty verdict against the high-ranking official N. Kazhin, who held the post of deputy head of the city's communal infrastructure development department.

The court found Kazhin guilty of obtaining funds amounting to 19.5 million tenge, which he received from a local entrepreneur. The official had promised to facilitate the conclusion of government procurement contracts for the sanitary cleaning of courtyard areas.

For the crime committed, Kazhin was sentenced to 6 years in prison. In addition, the court ruled to strip the convicted person of the right to hold positions in the civil service and in public sector organisations for life.

As part of the same sentence, Kazhin's property was confiscated — two vehicles with a total value of more than 21 million tenge. The confiscated property will be turned over to state revenue.

It is worth noting that at present the court decision has not yet entered into legal force, which leaves the convicted person the right to appeal.
