The man suffered a chemical burn to his oesophagus after a drink from a café in Almaty

A man in Almaty ended up in hospital after drinking a beverage delivered from a cafe. According to doctors, he was diagnosed with chemical burns to his oesophagus and skin. The circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated, and a statement has already been filed with the police.

WHAT CONDITION IS THE VICTIM IN

According to the Almaty Health Department, the patient was admitted to the Central City Clinical Hospital with a diagnosis of "poisoning by an unidentified substance", a second-degree chemical burn to the oesophagus and a first-degree chemical burn to the skin, reports Centralmedia24.kz.

The man was hospitalised in a somatic ward.

The department stated that, as of now, his condition is assessed as stable, with no negative developments.

"He is receiving full medical care in accordance with current clinical protocols. The patient is under constant supervision by specialists," the department clarified.

WHAT THE RELATIVES SAID

Cosmetologist Saodat Zhuraeva reported the incident on 26 February in Instagram. According to her, the family ordered food and drinks from a cafe, but a chemical solvent was allegedly found in the compote jar instead.

She stated that the man took one sip and suffered burns to his oesophagus, stomach and face. According to her, the liquid also splashed onto the victim's body. The relatives consider the incident serious and fear that a child could have been in his place.

Zhuraeva said that the victim's daughter has filed a statement. According to her, the legal classification of the incident is being discussed, but no official information regarding the procedural status of the check or investigation was provided at the time of publication.
