In the Atyrau region, a local resident was detained on suspicion of blackmail.
According to polisia.kz, officers from the regional police department’s organised crime unit arrested a suspect in a blackmail case involving 1 million tenge.
It emerged that the man was extorting money from a 27-year-old citizen, threatening to distribute personal video footage on social media.
The accused was eventually caught red-handed while receiving part of the sum from the victim.
“A criminal case has been opened on charges of blackmail. Further information cannot be disclosed in the interests of the investigation,” the statement said.
Earlier, two bloggers from the Turkestan region were detained on suspicion of blackmail. They demanded 100,000 tenge from a district school principal in exchange for removing a social media post that damaged his business reputation.
Additionally, law enforcement officers arrested a resident of Semey with multiple previous convictions for fraud. He is suspected of having extorted money for several years from workers on passenger trains passing through Semey, by posing as a “blogger” and threatening to release defamatory video material.
