The court ruled in favour of Kairat Boranbayev in a property dispute with his wife Sholpan Boranbayeva.
According to Kursiv.media, she was denied a share of the premises and land plot in Almaty, which were confiscated to the state in March 2023 as part of a case involving embezzlement during a deal between QazaqGaz and AsiaGaz Chungja.
As revealed in court documents, the dispute concerns a two-storey administrative building adjacent to the Esentai Tower business centre and the Esentai Mall shopping centre. According to 2GIS, this building houses two establishments – the Tor and Cafeteria restaurants.
It will be recalled that Boranbayev was previously sentenced to 8 years in prison. It was reported at the time that Boranbayev had siphoned around 4.8 billion tenge from AsiaGazChungja LLP to launder criminally obtained money.
The sentence was later overturned, as Boranbayev ultimately agreed to a plea deal with the investigation. Media reports indicated that in June last year, he compensated for material damages amounting to 14.5 billion tenge.
Additionally, it was reported that the former in-law of Dariga Nazarbayeva voluntarily returned assets worth over 90 billion tenge to the state and transferred 30 billion tenge to the Education Infrastructure Support Fund.
Shortly thereafter, Kairat Boranbayev pleaded guilty by agreeing to a plea deal with the prosecutor, after which his sentence was commuted to 6 years in prison, with confiscation of property.
Later, the court granted the petition of the businessman and replaced the unserved portion of his sentence with a restriction of liberty. As of now, Kairat Boranbayev has been released from prison and is under probation supervision.
