In Astana, a former university employee was convicted for misappropriating money from students and their parents, promising to transfer them to grant-funded education.
According to the press service of the city prosecutor's office, while holding a position in the graduate employment support sector, the defendant convinced victims that she could "sort out issues" with academic performance, transfer to a grant, and the return of scholarships.
It is reported that between 2023 and 2024, she took possession of more than 3 million tenge. 15 people were affected by her actions.
In the end, the court sentenced the former university employee to 3 years of restricted liberty with probation supervision established for the entire appointed term. The damage to the victims was fully compensated.
Recall, in May last year, Aset Kaliyev, Chairman of the Board - Rector of NJSC "West Kazakhstan Marat Ospanov Medical University", was detained. He was suspected of receiving a bribe of 12 million tenge.
In July, employees of Astana's Gumilev Eurasian National University (ENU) accused the university's management of major financial violations. According to them, ENU had developed a whole tradition of "skimming" funds allocated annually by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.
