Discrimination against children based on social status has been identified in a state-run camp in Burabay.

The Prosecutor's Office of the Burabay District in the Akmola Region has identified serious violations at the Republican Educational and Health Centre "Baldaueren". The inspection revealed a systemic failure to comply with sanitary standards and an exceedance of the camp's permitted capacity.

According to the press service of the authority, the centre's technical specifications indicate it is designed for 400 places. However, 574 children were present during one session — 43% more than the norm.

An additional 12 classrooms, which were not adapted for accommodating children, were used for housing: they lacked sanitary facilities and breached hygiene requirements. Instead of the stipulated 6 people per room, 9 were living in each.

Particular concern was raised over the living conditions: children who arrived under the state quota were placed in overcrowded rooms, while those staying on a commercial basis were housed in separate rooms with showers and all necessary amenities.

"To eliminate the violations and hold those responsible to account, the prosecutor's office has initiated measures of prosecutorial response. Special emphasis has been placed on the unacceptability of creating a threat to the life and health of minors," the statement said.

It should be recalled that earlier, Mazhilis deputy Askhat Aimagambetov reported that Kazakhstan intends to change the approach to inspections by sanitary and epidemiological services in educational institutions. He noted that in recent years a system had developed where real oversight was often replaced by formal procedures.
