On the territory of the Atyrau Oil Refinery (AOR) and in the nearby residential area, monitoring of air quality and physical factors has begun.

According to ORDA, the work is being carried out by specialists from the Republican Scientific Research Centre for Atmospheric Air Protection

The inspection is expected to determine the final boundaries of the sanitary protection zone around the plant.

It is noted that active residents of the city are getting involved in the initiative. Meanwhile, Deputy of the regional maslikhat Arman Khairullin warned that any attempts to conceal or distort the monitoring results will be punishable.

"Representatives of the plant and all responsible organisations must be honest with the people and act strictly within the framework of the law", the deputy stated.

Residents of Atyrau are counting on the transparency of the monitoring results and are demanding immediate measures if violations are identified.

For context, earlier the specialised environmental prosecutor's office of the West Kazakhstan region fined the company "Karachaganak Petroleum Operating B. V." 740 million tenge for environmental pollution in the region.
