Deputy Chairman of the AFM Zhenis Yelemesov told journalists that Kairat Boranbayev has returned 134.5 billion tenge to the state, but the amount may still increase.

According to informburo.kz, Yelemesov reported that the investigation into the businessman is ongoing.

“In total for that case, for which he was convicted, the damage was compensated in the amount of 14.5 billion tenge. In addition, he voluntarily compensated damages in the amount of 120 billion tenge. 134.5 billion in total. As of today, I am stating what he has compensated. The criminal case has not been closed yet. It is under investigation,” said Zhenis Yelemesov.

Journalists were also interested in whether there is any preventive measure in the new investigation regarding Boranbayev. The deputy chairman of the AFM noted that there is no need for that. According to him, within the framework of the case for which he was convicted, his freedom has already been restricted.

It is reported that the new investigation is being conducted on suspicion of embezzlement of budget funds and tax evasion.

Recall that earlier Kairat Boranbayev was sentenced to 8 years in prison. At that time, the businessman did not admit his guilt, calling the charges brought against him absurd. Later, Boranbayev made a deal with the investigation, and the sentence was annulled.

In addition, it was reported that the former in-law of Dariga Nazarbayeva voluntarily returned assets worth over 90 billion tenge to state ownership and transferred 30 billion tenge to the Education Infrastructure Support Fund.

Shortly after this, Boranbayev made a deal with the prosecutor, as a result of which he was sentenced to 6 years in prison with confiscation of property.

Later, the court granted the businessman’s request and replaced his unserved portion of the sentence with restriction of freedom. Currently, Kairat Boranbayev has been released from prison and is under probation supervision.
