Activists from the public movement «Жаңа адамдар» have uncovered an illegal rubbish dump covering an area of 70,000 m², which lies directly beneath the windows of the «Ayva» residential complex in Astana.

On their Instagram page, the activists reported that dozens of lorries dump waste there every day, posing a threat to the local environment and the health of its residents.

It has emerged that the area where the landfill has formed was originally intended for the construction of a business centre.

"So, we have a plot of land designated for the development of a future business centre. But instead of construction, we see KamAZ trucks arriving every day and unloading something. There is rubbish everywhere, piles of building materials, and decomposing organic waste," the statement reads.

Experts confirm that the dumping of waste is illegal and could cause irreparable harm to the environment.

"What we see here is complete lawlessness, a violation of state regulations and building codes. We have the Code of Administrative Offences. There are Articles 313 and 344. <…> They cannot have a permit, because this is illegal," said lawyer Nursultan Orynbekov.

Meanwhile, environmental specialist Aidana Kadyrova stated that this rubbish would not only damage the residents and the land at the site but also put the entire ecological future of the district at risk.

The activists also attempted to get comments from those responsible and from workers at the landfill, but instead of answers, they received insults.

«Жаңа адамдар» called on construction companies Wien Deluxe and BI Group, whose construction site waste is being taken to this unauthorised dump, to thoroughly check the activities of their own subcontractors.

At the same time, the activists appealed to the Deputy Akim of the Yesil District of Astana, Madiyar Nugerbekov, asking him to intervene and take action.

"Activists of the 'AntiTrash' civic campaign urge residents of Astana not to stand by: record instances of violations, prevent illegal dumping of rubbish, and demand concrete solutions from the authorities. The cleanliness of the capital is our shared responsibility!", the activists concluded.

Recall that in December last year, activists from the public movement «Жаңа адамдар» created a portrait of the Deputy Akim of the Yesil District, Madiyar Nugerbekov, out of rubbish at one of the unauthorised landfills in Astana, for which the authorities plan to allocate funds for clean-up only by 2028.
