An animal reintroduction project was presented to Presidents Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Vladimir Putin during the Russian leader's state visit to Kazakhstan.

HOW THE POPULATION RESTORATION PROGRAMME IS PROGRESSING

Four Amur tigers were released in the territory of the Ile-Balkhash State Nature Reserve as part of a project to reintroduce and restore the tiger population in Kazakhstan. The animals are being adapted to life in the wild under the supervision of specialists.

For subsequent monitoring, the tigers were fitted with satellite collars. These allow the movements of the predators to be tracked and their condition to be monitored after their release into their natural habitat.

WHAT AGREEMENTS KAZAKHSTAN AND RUSSIA REACHED

During the state visit of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to Russia in November 2025, the parties signed a joint plan of action for the import and adaptation of Amur tigers in Kazakhstan.

Under these agreements, the Russian side handed over four Amur tigers to Kazakhstan.

The initiative is aimed at restoring the tiger population in Kazakhstan. The project is also seen as a contribution to the preservation of global biodiversity.
