Nurassyl Bolat, son of Daulet Turlykhanov, a member of the Mazhilis, has been released after fully serving his sentence for an attack on lawyers in Almaty. He spent 1 year, 5 months and 18 days in a penal colony after the court replaced a restriction of liberty with a custodial sentence.
DETAILS
On 2 April 2026, the press service of the Committee of the Criminal Executive System (CCES) reported that Nurassyl Bolat had been released for having fully served the term imposed by the court.
HOW THE EVENTS UNFOLDED
The incident occurred on the night of 11 February 2023 in Almaty. At that time, Nurassyl Bolat assaulted a married couple who were lawyers. According to the victims — Oleg and Anna Chernov — the attack happened when they tried to defend a young woman. As a result of the conflict, Oleg Chernov suffered a broken rib, and Anna Chernov was struck in the jaw.
It later emerged that at the time of the incident, Bolat was serving compulsory military service and should have been at a military unit in Otar.
WHAT PUNISHMENT THE COURT IMPOSED
On 9 October 2023, a military court found Nurassyl Bolat guilty of intentionally causing moderate bodily harm for hooligan motives and imposed a fine of 500 MCI (approx. 1.7 million tenge at the time).
On 14 May 2024, the Supreme Court reviewed the case and amended the sentence, imposing a punishment of two years' restriction of liberty.
WHY THE SENTENCE BECAME A REAL TERM
Despite restrictions, including a ban on visiting entertainment venues at night, Nurassyl Bolat repeatedly violated the conditions of his probation.
The case file states:
- 14 August 2024 — was in a public place at three in the morning;
- 11 October 2024 — visited a restaurant in the evening;
- 12 October 2024 — was at a night establishment;
- 14 October 2024 — was seen at a celebration.
For 'malicious violation of probation conditions', on 21 October 2024, the court of the Medeu District of Almaty replaced the remaining term with a custodial sentence. The defendant was taken into custody in the courtroom. The unserved portion amounted to 1 year, 5 months and 18 days, which he spent in a medium-security penal colony.
ATTEMPTS TO MITIGATE THE PUNISHMENT
In November 2024, the defence filed an appeal, but the court upheld the decision.
In September 2025, Nurassyl Bolat once again sought to have the remaining term replaced with a more lenient punishment, claiming he had reformed. His request was supported by the prosecutor and the victims, the Chernovs, but the court refused, citing previous violations and a lack of proven reform.
