Security forces in Kyrgyzstan have detained the former deputy head of the State Committee for National Security on charges of abuse of office.

A former deputy chairman of the State Committee for National Security (SCNS), Timur Shabdanbekov, has been detained in Kyrgyzstan on suspicion of abuse of official position. Other individuals have also been detained as part of the same investigation.

WHO WAS DETAINED

According to the Kyrgyz news outlet Kaktus Media, six other SCNS employees have been detained alongside Timur Shabdanbekov.

As reported by 24.kg citing its own sources, law enforcement agencies also detained:

  • the head of the company “Red Petroleum,” Akylbek Mamatov;
  • the former deputy head of the State Property Management Fund, Bekzat Abdikakharov.

At the time of publication, official bodies had not disclosed the details of the criminal case, nor had they clarified the circumstances of the detentions.

WHAT IS KNOWN ABOUT THE CASE

According to media reports, Timur Shabdanbekov is a suspect in the case for abuse of official position.

However, the open-source materials do not specify what specific actions the individuals are charged with. The other detainees are also mentioned in the context of the same investigation, but their procedural status has not been officially confirmed.

CONTEXT

The series of detentions of former and current members of the security forces and state bodies points to large-scale personnel and law enforcement processes in Kyrgyzstan.

Earlier in Bishkek, another former deputy head of the SCNS, Daniel Rysaliev, was detained. He is suspected under the article “Corruption”.

There have also been reports of the detention of former Member of Parliament Shairbek Tashiev, who is suspected of corruption.

The detention of Tashiev drew attention because of his family ties to former SCNS chairman Kamchybek Tashiev.
