President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signed a Decree on the appointment of elections for deputies of the Kurultai of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The vote is scheduled for 23 August 2026.

WHEN THE ELECTIONS WILL TAKE PLACE

According to the Presidential Decree, the elections for deputies of the Kurultai are scheduled for 23 August 2026. The document came into force on the day of its official publication.

WHO WILL ORGANISE THE ELECTIONS

According to the document, the Central Election Commission (CEC) must organise the preparation and conduct of the elections.

Furthermore, the Government, akims of the capital, regions and cities of national significance have been tasked with taking the necessary organisational, logistical and financial measures to hold the elections.

CONTEXT

From 1 July 2026 a new Constitution came into force in Kazakhstan, in accordance with which the powers of the Parliament were terminated. Instead of a bicameral Parliament consisting of the Senate and the Majilis, the unicameral Kurultai has begun its work.

According to the words of Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the elections to the Kurultai will mark the beginning of a process of large-scale political transformation. It concerns a 'restructuring' of the entire political system of the country. He also stressed that political and economic reforms must be accompanied by positive changes in public consciousness.
