In Almaty, 10 people have been detained on suspicion of involvement in a number of serious and extremely serious crimes. Among those detained are previously convicted members of the criminal underworld. The court has authorised their arrest.

WHAT THE MINISTRY OF INTERIOR REPORTED

According to Polisia.kz, the detention took place on 8 May as part of measures to ensure public safety and implement the "Law and Order" principle.

As reported by a representative of the Department for Combating Organised Crime of the Ministry of Interior (MI) Kuandyk Alpys, police officers detained members of an alleged criminal group of 10 people. They are suspected of involvement in hooliganism involving weapons, extortion, causing grievous bodily harm, as well as the illegal trafficking of weapons and other prohibited items.

WHAT WAS FOUND DURING SEARCHES

Law enforcement agencies conducted 21 authorised searches. The MI reported the seizure of weapons and other items posing a threat to public safety.

At the place of residence of one of the suspects, several units of firearms and traumatic weapons were discovered, including sawn-off shotguns and a Kalashnikov assault rifle with ammunition.

According to the MI, the assault rifle was previously stolen during the January events from the Police Department (PD) of the Zhambyl Region.

WHAT DECISION DID THE COURT MAKE

All those detained have been placed in a temporary detention facility (TDF). The court selected a preventive measure in the form of remand in custody.

The MI reported that investigative and operational measures are ongoing. Law enforcement agencies are checking the suspects' possible involvement in other episodes of unlawful activity and are identifying other individuals who may be linked to the case.

The MI also emphasises that efforts to suppress the activities of organised criminal groups continue as part of ensuring public safety.
