A crane operator of a tower crane, Akmaral Karabaliyeva, had her right leg amputated after the structure fell at a construction site in Astana, where the woman suffered a severe injury during dismantling.
HOW THE CRANE FELL
According to KTK, the accident occurred on 31 August during the dismantling of a tower crane. While one of the sections was being removed, the structure shook sharply, after which the crane collapsed.
A fitter died at the scene, and Akmaral Karabaliyeva was taken to hospital unconscious. As a result of the injury, her right leg was amputated. At the time of publication, the woman had already been in hospital for the fourth week.
WHAT THE VICTIM SAYS
According to the crane operator, during the dismantling one of the workers warned of a possible danger, after which the structure shook sharply. The woman said that after the incident she experiences severe pain and for now cannot imagine how she will live on.
The employer purchased a wheelchair for her and, according to the victim, offered compensation in the amount of three monthly wages. Karabaliyeva considers such a payment insufficient and demands lifelong financial provision in connection with the loss of working capacity.
WHAT IS KNOWN ABOUT THE INVESTIGATION
The crane collapse is being investigated by a specially created commission. A specialised organisation has been brought in to establish the immediate cause of the collapse.
As reported by the head of the department of the state labour inspection committee, Rustam Zhandosov, the worker was officially employed and had an insurance contract.
After the investigation is completed, the commission will draw up a report and send it to the insurance company for insurance payments. The cause of the crane collapse has not yet been established.
WHAT THE AMOUNT OF PAYMENTS DEPENDS ON
After being discharged from hospital, Akmaral Karabaliyeva will have to undergo a medical and social examination and have her disability established. It is the level of loss of working capacity determined by the examination that will become the basis for calculating monthly payments.
It is noted that the employer must pay the benefit until retirement age. At the same time, the exact amount of the payments has not yet been determined.
The fallen tower crane remains at the scene of the incident. Dismantling of the structure will begin after the investigative actions are completed.
