Dust storms and rain mixed with soil have been recorded in the Atyrau region, prompting a comprehensive study into the causes of the phenomenon. The situation has attracted the attention of the authorities, as it directly affects the region's ecology and the quality of life of its residents.

WHY THE DUST STORMS OCCURRED
According to the Atyrau region akimat, a special working group led by the deputy akim of the region, Zhasulan Bisembiev, conducted a flyover of the shallowed areas of the Caspian Sea. Its members included representatives from relevant departments, including the Department of Ecology, the Department of Emergency Situations, and environmental protection specialists.

As explained by the head of the Department of Ecology, Yerlan Yesenov:
"Due to the drop in the level of the Caspian Sea, areas previously under water have been exposed. Salt and fine sand have accumulated in these areas, which are lifted into the air by the wind and spread across the city. This, in turn, has affected the sharp change in the ecological situation."
WHAT RESEARCH IS ALREADY UNDERWAY
Currently, specialists are taking soil samples both in the coastal zone and within the city limits. Laboratory studies have begun, which should provide a precise understanding of the causes of what is happening. The materials do not specify when exactly the results of the analyses will be available.
WHAT MEASURES ARE BEING CONSIDERED
According to Zhasulan Bisembiev, if the research findings are confirmed, it is planned to take measures to stabilise the situation. In particular, the planting of vegetation adapted to local conditions on the dried sections of the seabed is being considered.
Also under discussion is the possibility of using territory moistening technologies to reduce the lifting of dust and salt into the air.

WHERE THE SITUATION IS MOST DIFFICULT
Currently, four areas with an exposed layer of fine sand have been identified within the city. Due to the lack of vegetation, these are the primary sources of dust. These territories are planned to be included in the landscaping programme.
CONTEXT AND SIGNIFICANCE
Earlier, the akim of the Atyrau region, Serik Shapkenov, ordered a comprehensive analysis of the factors contributing to the occurrence of dust storms, with the involvement of the scientific community. A task has also been set to develop a set of measures for the phytoremediation of the coastal and dried-up areas of the Caspian Sea.
