A 23-year-old resident has been detained in Astana on suspicion of spreading false information and collecting money under a false pretext. According to the investigation, he posted a story on Threads about allegedly experiencing sexual violence during his army service and provided bank details for money transfers.

HOW THE SCHEME WORKED

According to the Polisia.kz portal, on 23 February a post appeared on the social network Threads from an anonymous account, the author of which claimed to have suffered sexual violence during military service and to have received threats. In the post, he stated that he needed financial help to leave the country and attached bank details for transfers.

In the text, he also referred to depression and personal problems.

It is specified that within just two days, more than 100 money transfers were received into the specified account. The amounts of the transfers are not detailed in the materials.

HOW THE DISCREPANCIES WERE IDENTIFIED

Suspicions arose after one of the network users contacted the police to verify information about the bank account. During the investigation, it was discovered that the bank account belonged to a 17-year-old boy who, according to his statement, had passed the details on to an acquaintance.

The boy reported that he met this man in a hostel. The man asked to use the account, explaining it by claiming issues with his own bank accounts and promising to repay a debt. The teenager agreed, unaware of any potential illegal activity.

WHAT LAW ENFORCEMENT ESTABLISHED

During operational search activities, police officers identified and detained the 23-year-old author of the publication. According to the investigation, the information he posted does not correspond to reality.

It was also established that the detainee has no connection to military service and has not previously served. According to the suspect, he posted the false message deliberately to collect money.

WHAT MEASURES HAVE BEEN TAKEN

Criminal cases have been initiated regarding the dissemination of knowingly false information and fraud. A pre-trial investigation is underway.

The suspect has been placed in a temporary detention facility and arrested with court approval. Police clarified that he could face criminal liability in the form of imprisonment for up to several years.
