In the Almaty Police Department (PD), an internal investigation has been launched into the road traffic accident on Al-Farabi Avenue.
The incident in question occurred in the early hours of 21 March. The driver of a Zeekr car drove into the oncoming lane and collided with a Mercedes, resulting in the deaths of the driver and two passengers of the second vehicle.
WHAT IS KNOWN ABOUT THE ZEEKR DRIVER
The suspected perpetrator of the accident is under guard in intensive care. Once his condition stabilises, the man will be placed in a temporary detention facility (TDF).
Furthermore, information about the driver's identity is circulating in the public domain. Specifically, journalist Mikhail Kozachkov reported on his Telegram channel 'Kozachkov offside' that the driver could be a 32-year-old businessman.
No official confirmation of this data has been provided at the time of publication.
INVESTIGATION INTO POSSIBLE POLICE INVOLVEMENT
Head of the Almaty PD, Aydin Kabduldinov, confirmed that an internal investigation has been launched regarding the accident, including into police officers.
"We have launched an internal investigation. If it turns out that police officers were indeed involved or broke the law, their actions will be given a legal assessment and strict measures will be taken," the police chief stated.
The reason for the check is the spreading information about the possible involvement of a car linked to a police officer in the incident.
THEORY OF A NIGHT RACE
Lawyer Adiletkhan Moldakhan claimed that several cars may have been involved in an illegal street race on the night of the accident. According to him, five cars set off from Dostyk Avenue and travelled along Al-Farabi at high speed.
He also asserts that among these vehicles could have been a car linked to a police officer. No official confirmation of this information has been provided either.
