19-year-old Bakytzhan Umit from the Turkestan Region, who volunteered for compulsory military service, returned home on crutches after ten months. According to his mother, her son's complaints of severe leg pain went without proper attention for a long time. The Main Military Clinical Hospital of the Ministry of Defence claims that the serviceman received the necessary medical care.
HOW THE HEALTH PROBLEMS BEGAN
According to Ulysmedia.kz, Bakytzhan Umit was in his second year at a medical college in Saryagash. In November 2025 he went to serve in military unit 58012 in Kapshagai. The military medical commission had declared him fit for service before conscription.
About two months after the start of his service, the young man developed severe leg pain and began to limp. He was later diagnosed with a congenital hip joint condition. According to Bakytzhan, after one of the examinations he was told that everything was fine, but the pain and walking problems continued.
WHAT HAPPENED DURING THE SERVICE
Bakytzhan served in Kapshagai for about 4.5 months, after which he was transferred to Semey. There, doctors referred the serviceman to a hospital. He then spent about two months in Astana.
Bakytzhan's mother, Saule Kuandykova, claims that she herself approached the commanders and told them about her son's condition, but according to her, the complaints were not acted upon. Bakytzhan also said that he continued to perform physical exercises despite the pain.
After ten months of service, a military medical commission declared him unfit for military service. After being discharged on health grounds, he returned home on crutches and, according to him, is unable to walk on his own.
WHAT THE MINISTRY OF DEFENCE SAYS
The Main Military Clinical Hospital of the Ministry of Defence disagreed with the family's assessment. The head of the traumatology department, Aidos Alibayev, said that the serviceman received the necessary medical care.
According to him, after the complaints appeared, Bakytzhan underwent a comprehensive examination. In addition to the congenital joint condition, doctors identified accompanying diseases of the urinary system. He was then referred to a military medical commission, which declared the serviceman unfit for service.
WHAT HAPPENED AFTER RETURNING HOME
After Bakytzhan's return, the family faced another problem. According to Saule Kuandykova, when she tried to take her son to hospital, it turned out that he had no medical insurance.
CONTEXT
In December 2023, during compulsory military service, soldier Yerbayan Mukhtar sustained serious injuries, with the official version stating that he fell in the toilet, hitting his head.
However, the young man's family did not believe this. According to them, he was severely beaten, and many injuries were found on Yerbayan's body that could not have been sustained in a fall from his own height.
Kazakhstanis raised around 320 million tenge for the young man's treatment and rehabilitation. In the autumn of 2024, he was sent to Turkey for recovery.
On 23 June 2026, Yerbayan Mukhtar died.
