In the Ulytau region, prison employees and National Guard servicemen are accused of torturing convicts.

According to media reports, the case is being heard in the specialised inter-district military criminal court in Astana.

“In the dock are employees of facility No. 62 in the Karaganda region and the Ulytau region of the Criminal Executive System Committee of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and military unit No. 6505 of the National Guard of Kazakhstan. They have been charged with ‘cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment, torture committed by a group of persons, causing moderate bodily harm’”, the statement reads.

It has also emerged that the defence of the accused has raised procedural violations in court. Lawyers asked the court to return the criminal case to the prosecutor's office.
