The Federal Court for the Southern District of New York has found Ilyas Khrapunov guilty of violating a court order. Khrapunov is the son of the former akim of Almaty, Viktor Khrapunov, and the son-in-law of the former head of BTA Bank, Mukhtar Ablyazov. The case was initiated by the Almaty akimat and BTA Bank JSC.

According to the press service of the Ministry of Justice, on 6 August, Judge John G. Koeltl established that the younger Khrapunov had violated a previously issued order requiring mandatory reporting on his assets. This requirement was imposed after his previous finding of contempt of court. At that time, the businessman's son was ordered to pay $221,285 (118.6 million tenge).

"The new order obliges Ilyas Khrapunov to regularly provide full information about his assets and any attempts made to obtain money to fulfil the court judgments issued against him, under threat of further financial penalties," the statement said.

In addition, Khrapunov was ordered to reimburse the city of Almaty and BTA Bank for the costs incurred in connection with his "contempt of court".

Recall that it was previously reported that Mukhtar Ablyazov and Viktor Khrapunov are using loopholes in US copyright law to remove unfavourable materials from Google search results. To achieve these goals, they hired a contractor who had previously worked with the circle of Nursultan Nazarbayev and helped conceal compromising information about the former president's family.
