Residents of dilapidated and unsafe housing in the Baikonyr district of Astana are set to be offered new apartments.

According to the press service of the city akimat, the renovation will cover 240 hectares in the central part of the Baikonyr district. City authorities have already reached agreements with major developers. A number of investors have also been involved in the programme.

"In solving the problem of dilapidated housing, it is necessary to harness the potential of entrepreneurs and stimulate the investment activity of private developers. In this way, the problems of emergency and dilapidated housing will be solved through joint efforts. As a result, along with the central part of the city, its outskirts will also develop, and the appearance of the old part of the city will change accordingly," explained the akim (mayor) of the capital's Baikonyr district, Talgat Rakhmanberdi.

It is reported that companies such as BI-group, Moy Dom, and Galamart will participate in the construction. Work has already begun at the intersections of Egemen Kazakhstan and Kenesary streets, Imanov and Beisekbayeva streets, and Taha Hussein and Tashenov streets.

Incidentally, the renovation programme, implemented by Astana General Plan Research and Design Institute LLP together with district akimats, provides for the relocation of residents from 60 dilapidated buildings (around 4,200 people) into 1,400 new apartments as early as 2024.
