QR-codes for meat quality control: new requirements in Kazakhstan

Submitted by Вера Александрова on

The Ministry of Agriculture plans to use new traceability methods for livestock products.

“To prevent the slaughter of animals without a pre-slaughter veterinary inspection and post-slaughter veterinary and sanitary examination of carcasses and organs, the ministry has developed the ‘Veterinary and Sanitary Examination of Meat’ module,” the ministry’s press service reported.

It has become known that the system will automatically issue a veterinary and sanitary examination certificate after it is carried out at slaughter and retail facilities. The project also includes the introduction of QR codes containing information about the animal’s entire life cycle. This is expected to prevent the slaughter of animals without a veterinary inspection and examination of carcasses and organs.

“Currently, the project has been launched and is being implemented in all regions and cities of national significance. It has been connected to 1,664 slaughter facilities, veterinary and sanitary examination laboratories, and retail outlets. More than 1,470 veterinary doctors, laboratory staff from the Veterinary and Sanitary Examination Laboratories, and state veterinary and sanitary inspectors are registered in the system. Over 117,000 veterinary certificates and 438,000 examination reports have been issued using QR codes,” the statement said.

It was also reported that the system has already been successfully tested at the ‘Sharbakty’ veterinary control point, which borders the Russian Federation.
