An official representative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Shyngys Alekeshev, reported that people who do not speak the Kazakh language at least at a basic level will be denied citizenship of Kazakhstan.

According to the Kazinform media agency, knowledge of the language will be assessed by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.

"Ignorance of the state language at an elementary level, as well as the basics of the history and constitution of our country, may become grounds for refusal of citizenship. The elementary level will be determined by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. The aim of the amendments is quick adaptation and integration into society", said Shyngys Alekeshev.

The spokesman also noted that these amendments are in line with international practice. In many countries, obtaining citizenship requires passing an exam on knowledge of the state's history and language.

For example, in Germany, citizenship candidates must know the German language and also have an understanding of the country's culture and traditions. In Canada, it is necessary to know the history and duties of a citizen, as well as to pass a test in English or French, depending on the province. In Turkey, knowledge of the Turkish language is mandatory when obtaining citizenship.

"To prevent dual citizenship, a new basis for registering the loss of citizenship of the Republic of Kazakhstan is being introduced. Citizenship of our country will be lost if passports of another state are used after acquiring Kazakh citizenship. Previously, loss of citizenship of the Republic of Kazakhstan was only provided for acquiring citizenship of a foreign state", added Shyngys Alekeshev.
