The press service of the Aktobe akimat reported a fire at the city's new landfill. Rubbish brought in after community clean-ups caught fire.

"At the moment, the rubbish is smouldering. Twenty employees and four pieces of firefighting equipment, as well as 12 people and 10 units of equipment from the company 'ATK QYZMET', are involved in extinguishing the smouldering," said Bolat Serikov, head of the city's department of housing and communal services, passenger transport and roads.

It was also reported that the forces and resources of the city's utility services were brought in to help with the extinguishing.

Meanwhile, informburo.kz, citing the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Kazakhstan, reports that another fire broke out in the Atyrau region. According to reports, on 28 April, on the outskirts of the village of Karakul, Kurmangazy district, approximately 250 tonnes of stored hay caught fire.

Earlier, Senator Zakirzhan Kuziev called the information from the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources about waste sorting in Kazakhstan "fictional".

According to him, instead of the 20% claimed by the Ministry of Ecology, which exists only on paper, only 5-6% of waste in Kazakhstan is sorted. He also stated that only 21% of the country's landfills meet environmental standards.
