The Zhezkazgan City Court has announced another verdict for the head of the Department of Culture, Language Development and Archives of the Ulytau Region, Anuar Omar. He was previously convicted of corruption.
According to the press service of the Anti-Corruption Agency, in addition to Anuar Omar, in the dock were his subordinate – the head of the language development department A. Sarbayeva, the heads of the Regional Scientific and Methodological Centre G. Zholasharova and the Resource Centre for Language Development Zh. Ospanova, as well as a representative of a private company, O. Talgat.
They were found guilty of abuse of official powers through the illegal conclusion of an additional agreement for organising cultural events in Zhezkazgan amounting to 3.9 million tenge.
As a result, the head of the department was sentenced to 6 years and 6 months in prison, while his accomplices received a sentence of 1 year of restriction of liberty. In addition, the convicted were banned for life from holding positions in the civil service and quasi-public sector entities.
It will be recalled that in March 2024, Anuar Omar and the head of the Centre for the Protection of Historical and Cultural Heritage were found guilty of accepting a bribe of 2 million tenge from a representative of a contractor. The bribe was intended for general patronage and the signing of acts under a contract for archaeological excavations in the area of ancient burial grounds in the region. At that time, the court sentenced the officials to 6 years in prison. The representative of the contractor company received 3.5 years in prison.
In August of that year, it became known that Anuar Omar had been convicted of embezzling budget funds totalling 2.3 million tenge. It was reported that he had illegally appropriated funds for uncompleted work on publishing collections of articles by museum specialists and other scientists. Taking into account the first sentence, the defendant was given a cumulative punishment of 6 years and 6 months in prison.
