In the city of Shchuchinsk, Akmola Region, a gas-air mixture explosion occurred in a single-storey café attached to a five-storey residential building. After the explosion, a fire broke out, which firefighters quickly extinguished.
According to operational data, 26 people were injured as a result of the incident, of whom 7 died. Among the dead is a 16-year-old girl. The situation is being monitored by emergency services and regional authorities.
HOW THE EVENTS UNFOLDED
On 26 February at approximately 10:00 PM, in the city of Shchuchinsk, Burabay District, a gas-air mixture explosion occurred in a café attached to a residential building. A report of the incident was received by emergency services, after which the forces and resources of the Department for Emergency Situations of Akmola Region (DES) arrived at the scene within five minutes.
Firefighters removed 8 gas cylinders from the burning building and rescued more than 10 people. The fire has been fully extinguished. Rescue workers are currently continuing to clear the debris.
DATA ON THE DEAD AND INJURED
According to operational information:
- 26 people were injured;
- 7 people died, including a 16-year-old minor female;
- 13 people are in the Burabay District Hospital;
- 6 people have been released for outpatient monitoring.
Five of the injured were taken by emergency resuscitation vehicles of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, accompanied by medical staff, to the regional centre. Two more patients are scheduled to be transported additionally.
Additional medical teams have been formed under the health department. Necessary resources have been deployed. The emergency resuscitation vehicles of the Ministry of Emergency Situations are on standby.
WHICH SERVICES WORKED AT THE SCENE
At the scene of the incident, the leadership of the DES, the deputy mayor of the region, DES units, medical services, police, and the gas technical inspectorate were working.
A regional operational headquarters has been set up. Air ambulance and emergency resuscitation vehicles are on standby.
WHAT IS KNOWN ABOUT THE CAUSES
The causes and circumstances of the incident are being established.
The Mayor's Office of Akmola Region reported that all necessary assistance will be provided to the families of the deceased and the injured. Residents are asked to rely only on official information.
