From 1 July, regulations by the Ministry of State Security come into effect in China, expanding the powers of law enforcement. They will now be able to check electronic devices of people entering and leaving the country.
According to information from CNA, the police will have the ability to conduct searches and carry out investigations to analyse text messages, emails and videos on tourists' smartphones. It is reported that the aim of introducing these measures is to ensure national security.
Spot checks are already being carried out at airports in Shanghai, Shenzhen and some other aviation hubs. It is noted that the content stored on smartphones is subject to inspection, with customs officials reviewing gallery and correspondence.
However, the new rules risk having a negative impact on China's tourism industry, as some foreigners may stop visiting the country due to disagreement with the encroachment on their private boundaries and concerns over the security of personal data.
