Children's hospitals in Shymkent are overflowing due to a flu outbreak

In Shymkent, the epidemiological situation is worsening: the incidence of flu and flu-like infections among children has doubled. Due to the influx of patients, city children's hospitals are full.

According to Otyrar.kz, additional beds have been installed in the children's clinical hospital, but this is still not enough. The facility is designed for 499 beds, but 556 children are undergoing treatment.

According to the head physician of the Shymkent City Clinical Children's Hospital, Dinara Zhumadilova, the number of visits has more than doubled.

"If previously 300–350 patients were admitted per day, now this figure reaches 800–850. About 60% are children with inflammation of the respiratory tract, bronchitis and pneumonia," she reported.

It is noted, however, that the situation has partially stabilised compared to last week. The hospital is only admitting severe patients; the rest are being referred for outpatient treatment.

Doctors note that in most patients the temperature reaches 39–40 degrees, and in severe cases is accompanied by convulsions and shortness of breath — this is a reason for hospitalisation.

"Type A and B flu viruses are currently circulating, predominantly type A — this is determined in the laboratory. Flu-like infections are also actively spreading. The problem is that those who are ill do not stay at home and continue to visit public places, infecting others," reported Aigul Turymbetova, Deputy Head of the Shymkent City Department for Sanitary and Epidemiological Control.

Flu and acute respiratory viral infections traditionally become more active with the onset of cold weather and can persist until spring. The disease is transmitted by airborne droplets, so doctors recommend not visiting public places until complete recovery.

Vaccination remains one of the main methods of prevention. The free vaccine is provided to pregnant women, the elderly and citizens at risk. For others, the vaccine is available for a fee.
