Atyrau Oil Refinery LLP (AOR) has commented on complaints from residents of Atyrau regarding an unpleasant odour and visually observed clouds.

THE COMPANY'S POSITION

According to a statement from the Telegram channel «HALYQSTAN», the company explained that the clouds seen above the plant are not emissions of pollutants. According to the enterprise, these are water vapour formed during heat exchange and the operation of cooling towers. In cold weather, this vapour condenses in the lower layers of the air and can visually be perceived as smoke.

As for the unpleasant odour, atmospheric air measurements were carried out by the plant's own laboratory in the sanitary protection zone. According to the enterprise, no exceedances of maximum permissible concentrations of pollutants were recorded.

The plant is operating as normal.

DATA FROM THE ECOLOGY DEPARTMENT OF ATYRAU REGION

However, the results of the plant's measurements did not match data from state authorities.

According to the Ecology Department of Atyrau Region, on 25 January, exceedances of hydrogen sulphide concentrations were recorded in a number of residential areas of the city, in some places by tens of times.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

Control measures are planned against Atyrau Oil Refinery LLP. If violations are confirmed, the enterprise may be held accountable.
