The Kotyrbulak River overflowed its banks in the village of Besagash, Talgar District, Almaty Region. Seven household plots and a medical centre were flooded.
According to the press service of the regional Department for Emergency Situations (DES), the main cause of the flooding was the illegal narrowing of the riverbed.
It is reported that villagers unlawfully installed fences and gazebos along the riverbed, which led to a decrease in the flow capacity.
"To eliminate the consequences and prevent further flooding, the Talgar District Emergency Situations Department, together with local executive bodies, is deepening the ditch system upstream of the flooded houses," the statement said.
Around 15 people, 5 units of equipment and 2 motor pumps were deployed to address the flooding.
As of now, the water flow has been stopped. The authorised bodies are identifying violators and restoring the capacity of the riverbed.
The DES of the Almaty Region urged citizens to comply with water use regulations and not to alter the beds of water bodies arbitrarily.
