In Shymkent, a landlord has been held criminally liable for the first time for violating safety requirements when renting out a home.
According to the city prosecutor's office press service, a local woman rented out an apartment without coordinating with the gas service and without complying with gas safety standards.
The premises lacked gas control and ventilation systems, resulting in a gas leak, and the tenant died from carbon monoxide poisoning.
As a result, the Shymkent City Inter-District Criminal Court found the flat owner guilty under Article 306 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan ("Violation of safety requirements during work") and sentenced her to 4 years of suspended imprisonment with probation supervision.
"This case has become an important precedent: if you rent out housing and receive income, you are obliged to ensure the safety of tenants. Irresponsible attitude leads to serious consequences and criminal liability", the city prosecutor's office noted.
