In the Ulytau region, hydraulic structures of the Kengir Reservoir have been returned to state ownership.

According to the press service of the regional prosecutor's office, the reservoir, built in 1952, is a strategic facility and must therefore be in state ownership.

At one time, the reservoir's structures were transferred to the balance sheet of the city-forming enterprise LLP «Kazakhmys Distribution». To secure their return, the regional prosecutor's office submitted a representation to the Minister of Water Resources.

"In execution of the prosecutor's oversight act, a deed of gift was concluded and an acceptance certificate for the facility was signed. The authorised bodies now face the task of conducting a multifactorial survey of the reservoir and its hydraulic structures in order to take further measures for their modernisation," the statement reads.

It will be recalled that the Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Nurzhan Nurzhigitov, stated as early as September 2024 that the Kengir Reservoir would be returned to state ownership.

At that time, it was reported that the hydraulic structures at the facility were in a dilapidated condition, and local residents were concerned about the quality of the local water, its inefficient use, and the associated environmental problems.
