In the Karaganda region, a dispute between two families over who is buried in a single grave has led to an exhumation and DNA testing.
HOW THE DISPUTE AROSE
As reported by KTK TV channel, both families are certain that their relative is buried in this particular grave. The court ordered an exhumation to establish the identity of the deceased.
Aigul Zhamilenova claims that her mother was buried at this site about a year and a half ago. According to her, the family was unable to erect a headstone immediately, so they used marks they had left as a reference point.
"The other side claims it's their aunt. My mother was also short in stature. It's unclear now. But it can't be. Even if it's not true, we are ready to pay the other side's expenses. But it's impossible - 30 people attended the burial. 30 people are witnesses," she said.
The other side maintains the opposite version. They claim they buried their relative a week after that and regularly visited the cemetery.
"They arrived in December. If we put in pegs and fenced the area with warning tape in November, how could other marks have appeared there? There are inconsistencies in their story. First of all, let them answer to Allah, the Almighty. Secondly, let them answer to us. They have caused us moral and material damage, as well as harm to our health," said Kuralay Mailybayeva.
HOW THE EXHUMATION WAS CARRIED OUT
Both families, funeral service staff, mosque officials, witnesses, and police officers were present at the exhumation. Since about a year and a half has passed since the burial, visually identifying the person is no longer possible.
WHEN THE RESULT WILL BE KNOWN
The remains have been sent for genetic testing. According to the TV channel, the results of the DNA analysis could be ready within 30 days. The examination will determine which family made a mistake in identifying the burial site.
