Holidaymakers reported possible water contamination in Lake Burabay after swimming at the beach of a local sanatorium. According to them, a sharp unpleasant smell appeared in the water, and then they noticed faeces.

WHAT HAPPENED

According to Sinegor.kz, the environmental incident, according to the authors, occurred on the beach of one of the local sanatoriums.

Witnesses said that while in the water, they noticed a strong unpleasant smell, after which, according to them, faeces appeared on the surface of the water.

HOW USERS REACTED

Numerous user comments appeared under the post. Some commenters stated that they do not swim in Burabay, calling the lake polluted. Others linked the situation to possible problems with sanitary infrastructure, including the operation of treatment systems and a lack of public toilets.

CONTEXT

This is not the first time tourists have publicly complained about the sanitary condition of the Burabay resort. Previously, holidaymakers reported dirt, unpleasant smells, and a lack of public toilets in popular recreational areas.

The Akimat of Akmola Region linked some of the issues with unsanitary conditions in the resort area to the activities of entrepreneurs providing services without the necessary permits.

Following one complaint, the administration of the Burabay State National Nature Park (SNNP) explained that it is impossible to equip the entire shoreline with toilets due to the protected status of the area. The national park also stated that mass recreation is recommended only on officially equipped beaches where sanitary water quality control is carried out.
