President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev will take part in the G20 Summit, which is scheduled for December 2026 in Miami. The head of state has been invited to the meeting by US President Donald Trump.
WHAT IS KNOWN ABOUT TOKAYEV'S PARTICIPATION IN THE G20 SUMMIT
According to data from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of the Republic of Kazakhstan, preparations for the upcoming Summit were discussed on 12 August in Astana by Foreign Minister Yermek Kosherbayev and US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Paul Kapur.
The sides exchanged views on matters relating to preparations for the Summit and expressed readiness to continue cooperation to give substantive content to the agenda at the highest level.
WHAT ISSUES DID KAZAKHSTAN AND THE US DISCUSS
During the meeting, Kosherbayev and Kapur also discussed current issues of bilateral cooperation and the further strengthening of the expanded strategic partnership between Kazakhstan and the US.
The American side noted the potential for developing practical cooperation in the areas of energy, critical minerals, advanced technologies, digitalisation, transport and investment.
WHAT OTHER TOPICS WERE RAISED AT THE MEETING
Kosherbayev informed the American side about political and socio-economic reforms in Kazakhstan. The upcoming Kurultai elections, scheduled for 23 August, were discussed separately.
The sides also gave attention to Kazakhstan's initiative to strengthen the global architecture for water resources management. In particular, reference was made to President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev's proposal to establish an International Water Organisation as a specialised agency of the United Nations (UN).
