On the coast of the Caspian Sea in the Mangystau Region, 15 dead Caspian seals have been discovered. Specialists took samples of sea water and soil to establish the causes of the animals' death.

WHERE THE DEAD SEALS WERE DISCOVERED

According to the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA), on 12 October, inspectors of the "Caspian Seal" state nature reserve discovered the carcasses during coastal monitoring west of the village of Bautino in the Tupkaragan District.

The authorised bodies were informed of the find. Employees of the Department of Ecology of the Mangystau Region took samples of sea water and soil. Monitoring of the coastal territory continues.

HOW THE CAUSES OF DEATH ARE BEING ESTABLISHED

Specialists will need to study the results of the research to determine what led to the death of the animals.

The ministry also reported that after sampling, the coast must be cleaned in compliance with sanitary requirements.

As noted in the MoA, in spring and autumn on the coast of the Kazakh sector of the Caspian Sea, including in the Mangystau Region, cases of dead seals being washed ashore during storm winds from the north-west and west are recorded.

CONTEXT

From January to July 2026, 387 dead seals were discovered on the coast of the Mangystau Region.

In April 2026, 97 dead seals were discovered on the coast of the Caspian Sea. According to a preliminary assessment by specialists, the animals died a month before they were discovered, and storm winds washed them ashore.
