The only park in Uralsk has become the centre of public debate after ecologist Darkhan Sariyev claimed its green space is being reduced. During a meeting with representatives of the Ministry of Ecology and the Akimat, he called for urgent measures to preserve the park.
WHAT PROMPTED THE APPEAL
According to the publication Uralsk Week, the issue was raised on 30 June during a meeting between Vice-Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Nurken Sharbayev and the public.
Ecologist Darkhan Sariyev stated that, in his opinion, the park's management is allowing the reduction of green space in the interests of business. He asked the Deputy Akim of the West Kazakhstan Region (WKR), Kaliyar Aitmukhambetov, to take urgent measures to preserve the city's oldest park.
WHAT PROBLEMS WERE RAISED BY THE PUBLIC
During his speech, Sariyev reported that he regularly receives appeals from residents concerned about the condition of the park. According to him, the area remains a popular place for recreation, especially for the elderly, but the green zone is gradually shrinking.
The ecologist also stated that, despite promises not to carry out new construction, some trees are allegedly being cut down, after which business facilities appear in those areas. No data supporting these claims is provided in the materials presented.
Furthermore, Sariyev noted that, according to his information, the park lacks a master plan, which he believes should determine the placement of facilities and preserve most of the area as a landscape park.
WHAT THE AKIMAT REPRESENTATIVES SAID IN RESPONSE
Deputy Akim of the WKR Kaliyar Aitmukhambetov reported that an inventory of trees has now begun in Uralsk and Aksai.
He also agreed that it is necessary to allocate land for another park in the northern part of the city.
