The Almaty Prosecutor's Office has filed an appeal petition to reduce the sentence of journalist Alexandra Alyokhova, previously convicted in a case involving the illegal dissemination of personal data. The final decision will be made by the appellate court.

WHY THE PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE FILED AN APPEAL

According to Nege.kz, the Almaty Prosecutor's Office stated that the department is asking for the imposed sentence to be reduced.

The prosecutor's office noted that Alexandra Sentsova (the journalist's real surname; Alyokhova is a creative pseudonym) has no previous criminal record, is being prosecuted for the first time, has a minor child dependent on her, is positively characterised at her place of residence, and there are no circumstances aggravating criminal liability or punishment.

"The prosecutor's office has filed an appeal petition to reduce the sentence," the department reported.

WHAT SENTENCE THE COURT HANDED DOWN

Earlier, the court found Alexandra Alyokhova guilty under Part 5 of Article 147 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan ("Causing substantial harm to the rights and legitimate interests of a person as a result of the illegal dissemination in mass media of personal data constituting their private secret").

The journalist was sentenced to 3 years of imprisonment with a deferral of the execution of the sentence for 5 years, and was also banned from engaging in journalistic activity for a period of 3 years.
